Margate City Historical Society and Museum Information
Can you believe it has been eight years since we first got our Margate Historical Society off the ground...and hit the ground running we did! Lots of things have been accomplished since that first meeting on December 16, 1995. The microfilming of the old weekly Margate Beacons prove to be more and more of an asset. We discover, confirm and verify information all the time. The museum is constantly being updated and changed. Of course you'd have to come to 7 South Washington St. to see these changes. Please drop in and see us! Fifteen years ago, Robert "Pat" Patterson and Frank Tiemann had a vision for the City of Margate. The two men who served as public servants for decades, wanted to create an historical society for the preservation of artifacts and memorabilia related to this seashore community. In October of 1996 twenty people attended a meeting to discuss the feasibility of establishing the Margate City Historical Society. During the course of the next several months, officers were selected, by-laws and the constitution were written, and the organization's goals were established. One of the main goals was to create a museum dedicated to the preservation, documentation and presentation of historical records and artifacts of the City of Margate. In May of 1997, City Fathers announced the donation of the building at 7 South Washington Avenue. A lease was drawn up granting the Margate City Historical Society permission to lease the building for a cost of $1.00 per year for five years. Visitors to the Margate City Historical Society can view old photographs, genealogical records, books, letters, advertising, political documents, antique fire fighting equipment and other items illustrative of life, conditions and events in Margate's past. We hope you will visit soon.
